The Central Bank's foreign currency sales since March 19 have reached 40 billion dollars.

Economist Uğur Gürses stated that since the detention of İmamoğlu on March 19, the Central Bank has sold $39.5 billion in foreign currency.

Economists calculated that since the detention of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu on March 19, the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey has made approximately $40 billion in sales to suppress the currency. İmamoğlu was detained one day after the cancellation of his diploma from Istanbul University on March 18, and was later arrested on March 23 in a 'corruption' investigation. This entire process came after investigations opened against the Mayor of Istanbul in recent weeks and before the CHP's presidential candidate primary. At the beginning of these investigations, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had said, "They know very well that there are bigger turnips in the bag. This is the reason for their panic." During this period, record levels in foreign exchange were observed along with a decline in the stock market. The Central Bank sold billions of dollars in reserves to maintain the currency during this process. In the stock market, purchases were also made through state banks. On Monday, Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek responded to criticisms regarding the depletion of the Central Bank's reserves by saying, "Reserves are a buffer against internal and external shocks. Reserves are accumulated to be used." However, alongside the criticisms, the declines in reserves continue. Economist Uğur Gürses stated that since the detention of İmamoğlu on March 19, the amount of foreign currency sold by the Central Bank has been $39.5 billion. According to financial markets expert Iiris Cibre, this amount has exceeded $41 billion. Cibre's response to Şimşek's defense of reserves was: "It is true that reserves are accumulated for turbulent times. However, shouldn't a country not create this much turbulence on its own? After our own turbulence came global turbulence. Instead of using it for global turbulence, we used it for the turbulence we created ourselves. That is the problem."
