Italy hosted King Charles III of England at the Quirinal Palace.
King Charles III made his first foreign trip to Italy on Monday since being hospitalized for a short period following a cancer diagnosis.
On the second day of their state visit to Italy, King Charles III and Queen Camilla met with Italian President Sergio Mattarella at the Quirinal Palace on Tuesday. The royal couple was accompanied to the palace by a group of more than 30 mounted presidential guards, where they enjoyed a demonstration flight performed by Italy's 'Red Arrows.' After the meeting, King Charles and Queen Camilla laid wreaths at some of Rome's most iconic landmarks, including the II Vittorio Emanuele Monument at Piazza Venezia. They also participated in a special tour at the Temple of Venus and the Colosseum, where they met a group of students and were greeted by a crowd of locals and tourists. An 18-year-old student from Bologna, Samuele Tassinari, said, "It's very emotional because I'm seeing them for the first time." He added, "We saw them pass by on their way to Quirinal Palace in the Bentley they use in London. It was very exciting." Later in the day, the royal couple met with representatives of the British community in the gardens of Villa Wolkonsky, the residence of the British ambassador in Rome. During the event, a military band played the British national anthem as well as classic songs by The Beatles. On Wednesday evening, President Mattarella will host a banquet in honor of the British monarch at the Quirinal Palace. King Charles III is also set to meet with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and, marking a first for a British monarch, address a joint session of the Italian Parliament. It is expected that Charles will emphasize the close ties between the two NATO allies, England and Italy, during a time when European countries are trying to support Ukraine in its fight against the Russian invasion. A planned meeting with Pope Francis was postponed by mutual agreement due to the Pope's recent bout with double pneumonia. The 88-year-old Pope returned to the Vatican two weeks ago and appeared before the public in St. Peter's Square on Sunday. King Charles, 76, was briefly hospitalized on March 27 due to treatment for an undisclosed type of cancer diagnosed over a year ago. The King was seen waving to supporters in central London the following day and has continued with his scheduled events since then.
