Explosion in Athens: A bomb was placed near the railway company.

The explosion occurred during a time when public outrage was growing over the railway disaster in Tempi in 2023, which resulted in the deaths of 57 people.

Authorities stated that a bomb placed near the offices of Greece's main railway company, Hellenic Train, exploded in a busy area in central Athens. No casualties or injuries were reported. Local media reported that a newspaper and news site received an anonymous phone call shortly before the explosion on Friday evening, in which the caller claimed that a bomb had been placed outside the railway company's office and would explode in about 40 minutes. The police secured a major street in Greece's capital, keeping residents and tourists away from the building, which also housed numerous bars and restaurants. Officials at the scene indicated that an explosive device had been placed in a bag near the Hellenic Train building on Syngrou Street. The explosion came at a time of heightened anger over the 2023 Tempi railway disaster, one of Greece's worst accidents, in which 57 people died and dozens were injured after a freight train and a passenger train traveling in opposite directions mistakenly entered the same track. Criticism of the government's handling of this accident has intensified in recent weeks, following the second anniversary of the tragedy that led to the deaths of many young people returning to university classes after the public holiday.
